Recently, the Project Management Institute (PMI) released the PMBOK Guide ® 7th edition.
In the past, PMI’s changes to the PMBOK have often led to changes in the PMP® exam.
Will the PMBOK 7th Edition Change the 2021 PMP Exam?
The short answer is that the PMP exam is not (yet) changing due to the release of PMBOK 7.
PMI PMBOK Guide 7th Edition Updates
PMI has provided updates that tell us what to expect from PMBOK 7. Here is the latest information available at the time of publishing this blog post (October 2021). We will do our best to reflect the latest information here, but always regard the PMI website as the most current source of information about the exams.
Based on PMI update – July 2021:
- It is important to note that the PMP exam is based on the Exam Content Outline, not the PMBOK Guide.
- Key Learnings and concepts from the PMBOK Guide – Sixth Edition remain valued.
- The PMBOK Guide is one of numerous potential inputs into preparing for the exam – and the sixth edition remains listed as a reference. Currently the seventh edition is not listed as a reference for the exam.
How Does PMBOK 7 Impact the CAPM?
According to PMI, the CAPM will follow PMBOK 6th edition, specifically:
- The current CAPM exam will continue to be based on the Sixth Edition as dictated by the Exam Content Outline for the CAPM examination.
- The Sixth Edition is a test preparation tool that candidates may leverage to prepare for the CAPM exam.
- The current CAPM exam is based on the PMBOK Guide – Sixth Edition. Continue using the Sixth Edition as your test preparation tool.
- PMI will give six months’ notice before any changes to the exam to reference the seventh edition.
